Sculptor portraiture contact

The portraits that I have been working on recently, all started as representations of my existing sculpture. Moving from three dimensions into two dimensions gave me an opportunity to consider the most important elements that I needed to emphasise and those that would allow the meaning and integrity of the work to remain. They have developed into abstract representations of people who are important to me and I feel that as a body of work I am moving in the right direction.

The portraits have all been created with gold leaf, gold dust and Japanese ink. I have made every effort to establish a solid sculptural form that appears to be isolated in both time and space. I believe that where my work has been the most successful this ambition has been achieved.

If nothing else they are broadly recognisable as the individuals willing to sit and change significantly in different light conditions and at different times of the day. The gold leaf responds to natural light in a totally different way to acrylic, oil or pastel.
